I recently had the pleasure of conducting a one-on-one photography workshop and tour in Seoul with Dawn from Singapore. She had just recently picked up a new mirrorless camera and wanted to make the most of it during her trip to Seoul. After an initial needs assessment, we decided that we wanted to focus on street photography and cityscapes, with an emphasis on composition.
Our first stop was Ihwa Mural Village, where we explored the hills and alleyways of the colorful village. We focused on framing and composition, as well as capturing peak moments as people came in and out of the scenes.
Our next destination was the National Museum of Korea, where we had a very specific shot in mind.
Up next we headed over to Dongjak bridge for Dawn’s first experience with long exposures. The observatory is a perfect spot for a shot of the Han River, bridge and the iconic N-Seoul Tower.
We went up to Dongdaemun for more long exposure action, capturing the dynamic light trails against the historic Heungjinjimun gate.
After the gate, we strolled over to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza for our final location of the day, photographing people as they moved through the futuristic space.
Our post-workshop image edit and critique resulted in a solid collection of images, as well as a few Lightroom tips and tricks picked up along the way. Dawn also sent over some excellent images that she took after the workshop, which rounds up her Seoul album nicely.
All in all, it was an awesome day out in Seoul! I had a great time guiding Dawn on a photographic journey through the city, sharing ideas and techniques and exploring our craft. Check out more of her images on Instagram.
